Thornton-Creswell family papers, 1835-1964.

Chiefly papers of Harry Innes Thornton Creswell (1891-1964), military attache to Tokyo; together with papers of Harry Innes Thornton (1797-1861), member of California Land Commission for 1851; Harry Innes Thornton (1834-1895), lawyer, Calif. State Senator, and officer in the Confederate Army during the Civil War; and Harry Thornton Creswell (1850-1915), San Francisco City and County Attorney and Police Commissioner; and miscellaneous family papers. Papers of Harry Innes Thornton Creswell (1891-1964) consist of letters (1917-1964) to his mother in San Francisco, mostly written from Japan; reports on U.S.-Japanese relations and Japanese nationalism (1940-1946) by the American Embassy in Tokyo; and two published vols. of A dictionary of military terms, English-Japanese, Japanese-English, American and Japanese editions, co-authored by Creswell.
